“Why Curation Is Important” Review

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

The title tells you what the article is about, why curation of news is important. I had to search in a dictionary for what exactly curation is. According to Google, curation is; “The act of organizing and maintaining a collection of artworks or artifacts.”

After reading the definition, understanding what a news curator is and does was extraordinarily easy. When I think about it, in a way, we are all news curators on our social networking sites; like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and even in blogs here on WordPress. Whenever there is some news story, we either retweet it or post it on our Facebook statuses. As a Twitter and Facebook user, I often post news about sports or other stories I find weird or interesting. I am so surrounded by news curators, I often get my news from them. If the news sounds far-fetched, I’ll double check it’s truth and when it is, I repost.

The best part about being a curator is that it is similar to being a news editor, but curators have much more freedom. “Even though curators share certain characteristics of editors, they don’t enjoy the exact same role. When a curator gathers information for their community, the content is something they are passionate about. Reporters, as we’re taught, are not supposed to be passionate and interject opinion into their story.”
